6th Annual John Lewis Celebration Concert: Aaron Diehl Quartet with Warren Wolf

Friday, July 19, 7:30 pm

South Broadway Cultural Center, John Lewis Theatre, 1025 Broadway Blvd. SE

presented in partnership with the New Mexico Jazz Festival and the UNM Jazz Studies Department

For the 6th Annual John Lewis Celebration, as part of the 14th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival, 32-year-old classically trained pianist and composer Aaron Diehl will perform with his quartet which features vibraphonist Warren Wolf (thereby replicating the instrumentation of John Lewis’ world renowned Modern Jazz Quartet). Diehl has made an indelible mark on the jazz world over the last 15 years, showing a rare affinity for early jazz and mid-20th century “third-stream” music, as well as tackling modern classics like Gershwin’s piano sonatas, and performing “I Got Rhythm Variations” with the NY Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra. In 2014, he became the youngest ever Monterey Jazz Festival Commission Artist where he performed his composition entitled “Three Streams of Expression,” which was dedicated to John Lewis. Boasting a technical prowess that continues the lineage of great vibe players such as Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson and Stefon Harris, vibraphonist/multi-instrumentalist Warren Wolf shares Aaron Diehl’s deep appreciation for both jazz and classical music. He has played and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, Tia Fuller, the SFJAZZ Collective, Joey DeFrancesco, Terri Lyne Carrington, and many others, and has recorded seven highly acclaimed albums as a leader. Diehl & Wolf will be joined by bassist, Peter Washington and drummer, Pete Van Nostrand. BUY TICKETS ONLINE HERE!

Film Screening and Discussion: The Modern Jazz Quartet: From Residency to Legacy by George Schuller

Sunday, July 21, 4:00 pm

Outpost Performance Space | 210 Yale SE

This year’s John Lewis Celebration will offer a film screening of the newly produced film, The Modern Jazz Quartet: From Residency To Legacy, directed by George Schuller. The screening will be followed by a Q & A with Schuller. Formed in 1952, The Modern Jazz Quartet pushed the boundaries of jazz and classical music at a time when the genre, like the country itself, was in the throes of change. An epicenter of this evolution was The Music Inn, a musical oasis nestled in the Berkshire Mountains. Jazz and Film Critic, Gary Giddins says, “George Schuller’s valentine to the Modern Jazz Quartet is one of the most entertaining jazz films—make that music films—ever made, from its unexpectedly surreal opening to Percy Heath’s final remarks. The music is sublime, the talking heads (RIP) are charming, and the story is by turns dramatic, funny, and inspiring. A must see.” Free!
